|Dark Iris by Georgia o'Keefe|
Orris root takes time to give up her charms . The roots ( rhizomes ? tubers ? ) must grow in the bleak soil , and when large enough ( about three years ) are lifted by hand ( and back-breaking labor ! ) with a wide fork during the heat of the summer , then dried for a few years before being ground into the magical stuff of perfume legend . The flower , though beautiful and sexy and mysterious , has nothing to do with it .
Historically , orris roots were used to sweeten linens , and larger irregular roots were given to babies to ease teething pain . In her book , Mary Doggett: Her Book of Receipts, 1682 she shares a recipe 'A perfume for a sweet bagg,' as follows:
'Take half a pound of Cypress Roots, a pound of Orris, 3 quarter of a pound of Calamus, 3 Orange stick with Cloves, 2 ounces of Benjamin, 3 quarters of a pound of Rhodium, a pound of Coriander seed, and an ounce of Storax and 4 pecks of Damask Rose leaves, a peck of dryed sweet Marjerum, a pretty stick of Juniper shaved very thin, some lemon pele dryed and a stick of Brasill; let all these be powdered very grosely for ye first year and immediately put into your baggs; the next year pound and work it and it will be very good again.'
I am always looking for " The One " and I really have found it in Iris Nazarena !!
Powdery , earthy , yet immediately swathed in sweet smoke , this is no wallflower . The sillage puffs and swirls around me gently and I truly love it . The orris is front and center - crumbly parched earth dried in the caress of hot sun , cooled by rains and winds , cured by time and care . Then embraced by sacred incense , only just now lit and barely smoking . This brief embrace in the heat of passion now cooled by juniper , softened with silken rose , roughed by an old leather jacket . Oh my , I have a new signature scent and I WANT a bottle !
